Davis savors beating Hornets
Baron Davis expected to be booed, expected some venom and trash to be hurled his way as he finally returned to the city he pouted his way out of three years ago. Asked before the game, then, if he had visited some of his pre-trade, pre-Katrina hot spots, Davis politely said no. The Warriors' guard, really under the weather, joked that he had put himself under house arrest. "In case someone sees me on the street and tries to beat me up or something," Davis said with a laugh. The only beat-down here was delivered by the Warriors, who continued their season-long trend of following head-scratching losses with head-turning wins like Wednesday's 116-103 triumph over the Hornets. The Warriors lost 111-107 at Houston on Tuesday. Golden State snapped New Orleans' winning streak at nine games and denied Byron Scott, Davis' main adversary, the chance to clinch coaching duties for the Western Conference All-Star team.
Paratek Pharmaceuticals Announces the Close of $40 Million Private ...
BOSTON, Oct. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Paratek Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced today that it has closed the first tranche of a $40 million private financing. Aisling Capital led the round, with additional participation by new investors, D.E. Shaw and Boston Life Science Venture Corporation, and current investors, Nomura Phase4 Ventures, Novartis BioVentures, BioFund Ventures, HBM BioVentures, Lombard Odier Darier Hentsch, BioVeda Fund and Hercules Technology Growth Capital. The second and final tranche is expected to be closed in early 2008. Pacific Growth Equities served as placement agent for the financing. Proceeds of the financing will be used primarily to advance Paratek's lead programs to develop broad-spectrum antibiotics, including two antibiotics for the treatment of resistant bacterial infections such as those caused by Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

Taylor Phinney's pursuit win at the UCI World Cup in Los Angeles over the weekend sure makes us look smart for putting him and Danny Summerhill on our awards-issue cover. Thanks, Taylor. We gave the 17-year-old Phinney and 18-year-old Summerhill our “juniors of the year" award for their 2007 accomplishments, which included Summerhill's silver medal at the world junior cyclocross championship and Phinney's gold at the world junior time trial championship — the first-ever gold in that discipline for an American junior man. Phinney had begun his second season of racing with a virtual tie for the overall win in the Category 2 Tour of the Gila, racing against men twice his age. He next took the overall win at July's Tour l'Abitibi, then shocked the cycling community in October by winning the national pursuit title at his first-ever velodrome competition.
