Roy Scheider
Roy Scheider, who died on February 10 aged 75, was a versatile and appealing actor who appeared in more than 70 films, including Steven Spielberg's Jaws and William Friedkin's French Connection. Despite his theatrical background, Scheider was best known for playing a string of tough-guys in film thrillers. His weathered face, doe eyes and broken nose gave him a vulnerable air which he often exploited playing down-to-earth everymen attempting to make the best of difficult situations. .
The Phantom Menace
Ethanol, methanol, rubbing alcohol it doesnt matter, as long as it gives their drinks the zing needed to dupe a few desperate drinkers. Distilleries and sugar refineries sell potable ethanol of varying grades. Cheaper still is industrial-grade alcohol, which is usually spiked with methanol or other toxins to prevent human consumption. Illegal operators either dont know, or dont care. In some countries, denatured alcohol is dyed green to make it instantly recognizable, but in Egypt it looks just like regular ethyl alcohol, says Maged Safwat, a downtown pharmacist. Pharmacies once had an annual quota of denatured alcohol to prevent them from selling off their 20-liter bottles to taht el-sillim spirit makers. Most now receive denatured alcohol in dispensable 100 milliliter plastic bottles, a practice that has reduced the incidence of methanol poisoning.
Fire Billy Knight first
This same ownership group trusted Don Waddell to fire Bob Hartley because they were convinced the Thrashers' coach had lost the team six games after a playoff season. Given Woodson is still employed, we have to assume he is somehow held in higher regard after over 200 losses. But since they have waited this long, they might as well make the move that makes more sense. Fire the builder, not the plumber. Bank robbed in Gulf Shores
A man who told a teller he had a gun held up the BankTrust branch in Gulf Shores on Wednesday afternoon, according to FBI reports. The bank at 1700 Gulf Shores Parkway was robbed about 2 p.m., said Special Agent Angela Tobon, FBI spokeswoman. Tobon said the man walked into the bank, handed the teller a note and demanded money. "No weapon was displayed, but he did say he had one," Tobon said, adding that no one was injured. The man walked out of the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash. Investigators were looking for a late-model red Chevrolet pickup truck with Georgia license plates, Tobon said. There were reports of a truck of that description traveling north on Alabama 59, according to police radio alerts in Gulf Shores and Foley.
RICKY GERVAIS
He certainly couldn't be less starry in the flesh. He suits his blank dressing room. Everything about him is everymanish and mundane except his talent and achievements - the Baftas, Golden Globes and Emmys that attest to his success in Britain and America. Gervais's live show is called Fame. He appears on stage wearing a crown and performs in front of his name spelled out in giant lights. "Too much?" he asks with a 100-watt twinkle. The stage set also includes a giant Emmy. This has been constructed with a shelf to hold a can of lager and a copy of a paper containing news of Gervais's new home in Hampstead. During the show he feigns outrage at inaccurate reporting - how dare they write his house cost £2.5 million? It was a million more than that. Celebrity appalled Gervais before he became well-known.
